Update the desktop app
Install a new version now, or turn on Automatic updates.
Timeglass checks for a new version every hour while it runs. You can install updates yourself, or turn on Automatic updates and let the app install them when you step away.
Find your version
Open the desktop app and go to Settings → Application → Updates. The first line shows the version you have, such as Timeglass 2.1.2. The line under it shows the update status:
- Ready to check for updates: Timeglass hasn’t checked since it opened.
- You're up to date: you have the latest version.
- Update 2.1.3 is available: a newer version is ready to download.
Update now
- Open UpdatesGo to Settings → Application → Updates. You can also select Check for Updates in the menu-bar or tray menu, which reads Update Available when a new version is waiting.
- Check for updatesSelect Check for updates. If a new version is out, the button changes to Download Update.
- Download the updateSelect Download Update. The button and status line show how the download and install are going.
- Let it restartTimeglass closes and reopens on the new version. Capture picks up again on its own.
If a meeting is recording, finish it before you select Download Update, because Timeglass restarts to finish the update.
On Linux, your computer may ask for your password before the update installs. On macOS, Timeglass sometimes needs a one-time setup first. Select Open Installer when asked and follow the installer.
Turn on Automatic updates
- Open the desktop app and go to Settings → Application → Updates.
- Turn on Automatic updates.
Automatic updates is off on a new install. The setting is saved on each computer (and each login on a shared computer), so turn it on everywhere you use Timeglass.
When automatic updates install
- When you’re away: it installs once you’re idle or your screen is locked.
- Within 24 hours: if you never step away, it installs anyway after 24 hours.
- Never during a meeting: it waits until a recording ends, plus 2 minutes.
Timeglass restarts by itself on the new version and usually sends a notification such as Updated to v2.1.2.
On macOS, if Timeglass has asked you to Move to Applications or Open Installer, automatic updates can’t install until you’ve done that once.
When an update is required
If your version falls too far behind or is no longer supported, Timeglass replaces its window with Update Timeglass. Select Update and relaunch. During a meeting, the button waits and shows You can update when your meeting ends. Timeglass keeps running in the background until you update.
If an update won’t install
- We couldn’t install the update: wait a few minutes, select Check for updates, then select Download Update.
- We couldn’t check for updates: check your internet connection and try again in a few minutes.
- Timeglass 2.1.3 needs macOS 14.0 or later: the status line names the system version the update needs. Update your computer’s operating system to at least that version, then check again.
- Finish the current meeting before installing the update: on Linux, updates wait for a meeting recording to end. Try again after the meeting.
- Administrator authorization was cancelled: on Linux, select Check for updates, then Download Update, and enter your password when asked.
- Timeglass is running from a disk image: on macOS, select Move to Applications when asked. Updates can’t install while Timeglass runs from the disk image.
- That update is no longer available: a newer version came out. Select Check for updates again.
